At this year's CeBit 2009 trade fair, there was a dedicated exhibition area called the Open Source Forum. In addition to providing booths for various Open Source projects, they also had a stage for presentations about different topics. Every talk was recorded and available as a live stream during the show.

My dear colleague Simon Phipps spoke about "Adoption-Led: The Third Wave of Open Source" on Wednesday, I gave a presentation about "MySQL Backup and Security Best Practices" on Friday. The recording of these and all other talks as well as the Linux New Media Award ceremony are now available from the archives. Enjoy!

The MySQL 5.1 Use Case Competition is in full swing - we've already received a number of cool and interesting submissions, which we will turn into articles that will be published on the MySQL Developer Zone over the course of the coming weeks. Today we received a note from Jakub Vrána from the Prague, Czech republic. He's the author of phpMinAdmin, a MySQL management tool written in PHP. Here's what he wrote:

In the beginning of September 2008, I have implemented MySQL 5.1 Events to the database management tool phpMinAdmin. I've used the Windows version of MySQL 5.1.26 for the development.

As phpMinAdmin tries to be full-featured, yet compact management tool, I have implemented Events to allow users of MySQL 5.1 manage it.

The implementation was quite straightforward, it took only 4.5 kB of PHP code. Events management is well described in MySQL documentation and easy to understand.

During the development, I've reported three bugs: Bug#39163, Bug#39165, Bug#39173. I have been positively surprised by the speed of reaction to these reports

There were free copies of the Linux Journal handed out to attendees outside in the hallways here at CommunityOne and I noticed that they just published this year's Readers' Choice Awards - MySQL was voted as the favourite database by 62.7% of their readers!

MySQL is not only the world's most popular open-source database, it's your favorite as well. Although PostreSGL,
SQLite, Firebird and others registered votes, the competition was not fierce. It doesn't hurt that MySQL runs on more than
20 different platforms.

Yesterday, Drupal 6.0 was officially released - check out this screencast to get a 29-minute tour on the new features in this release.

We'd like to congratulate the Drupal Developer Team and Community for reaching this milestone and are happy that the MySQL Server continues to serve well as the database backend for this awesome content management platform!

I had the pleasure of evaluating and reviewing a previous release of Drupal for the Open Source Content Management System Award from Packt Publishing and it has been one of my favourites.

Some time ago, our GUI tools development team started a contest to shake out the bugs in the MySQL GUI applications, especially the MySQL Administrator and the MySQL Migration Toolkit.

The contest ran for about 3 months and resulted in more than 170 bug reports, of which the team fixed all the significant ones (over 120) by now. This is quite impressive, especially considering the relatively small size of the GUI development team. I am very happy to see that the quality of these tools has been improved, they are quite useful, especially for users not keen on using the command line.

The new MySQL Administrator 1.2.8 and MySQL Migration Toolkit 1.1.8 have now been declared production quality (GA) are included in the MySQL GUI Tools Bundle 5.0 Release 8, which is now available from our download pages.

Today we announced the top 5 bug-reporters, which we will reward with an Apple iPod for their good bug reports:

I looked through the results of the 2006 SourceForge.net Community Choice Awards and was very happy to see that phpMyAdmin came out first in the Database and SysAdmin categories. Congratulations to Marc Delisle and the rest of the phpMyAdmin team!

phpMyAdmin will actually be showcasing their project in the DotOrg Pavilion at our MySQL Users Conference, taking place April 24-27 in Santa Clara, California. One more reason to not miss this event!
