It was ready for a while already, but now it's part of the official FOSDEM schedule as well: I am very pleased to announce the presentations and speakers of the MySQL & Friends Developer Room, which will take place this coming Saturday (5th of February) in Brussels, Belgium. This year, our DevRoom will be located in room H.2213 (in the H Building), which has a capacity of up to 100 people and will be available to us from 13:00-19:00 o'clock. We have 12 sessions lined up, each will last 25 minutes (incl. Q&A). Without further ado, here's our schedule:
I would like to thank all speakers for their submissions and for the efforts they are willing to go through in order to make it to this event! If you happen to be at FOSDEM this year, please stop by and join us. We also plan to head out for a meetup over dinner after the event. If you would like to attend, please register, so we can take you into account! (Thanks a lot for Kenny Gryp for organizing this meetup)

My calendar is filling up with speaking engagements about MySQL at various events quickly. Here is a list of events for the coming months where I'll be present:
- On Wednesday, January 26th, I will be speaking about MySQL High Availability Solutions at the San Francisco MySQL Meetup. I feel honored for having been invited to speak there and I'm quite excited that venue is fully booked! I look forward to meeting so many MySQL users in one place.
- On Saturday, February 5th, I'll be attending and speaking at the MySQL & Friends Developer Room at FOSDEM 2011 in Brussels, Belgium. I helped organizing the DevRoom and preparing the schedule for this event. We have a great lineup of speakers and topics, and I will speak about MySQL 5.5 there. I've been to FOSDEM many times before and it's one of the OSS conferences in Europe that I really enjoy coming back for every year.
- On Thursday, March 24th I'll be in Weimar, Germany, attending the "GUUG-Frühjahrsfachgespräch 2011", a conference organized be the German Unix User Group (GUUG). The topic of my session is MySQL Replication Technologies - an Overview (in German). Erkan, well-known member of the German MySQL community will also be there to talk about "Toolbox MySQL", giving an introduction to the MySQL plugin API and technology.
- Finally on April 10th-14th I will be in Orlando, Florida to attend and speak at COLLABORATE 11. Organized by the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG), this is a fairly large conference covering a wide range of Oracle Applications and Technologies. This year, they have more than 50 sessions on MySQL, provided by both well-known speakers of the MySQL community as well as Oracle employees. The MySQL talks will be given in one track, which spans from Monday till Thursday. So at least one does not have to choose between several interesting MySQL topics at the same time
If you happen to be around at any of these events, please stop by!
I've also submitted a number of MySQL talks for LinuxTag, which will take place in Berlin, Germany on May 11th-14th. I hope that my proposals are being considered and I would like to encourage you to submit one, too! The call for papers is still open until January 25th and it would be great to have some more MySQL content in the program...
Oh, and don't forget to mark your calendars for MySQL Sunday at Oracle Openworld 2011 later this year (October 2nd-6th)! I unfortunately missed last year's event, but this is going to be the conference with the largest MySQL show, lots of news and updates, and plenty of opportunities for networking. You can already register for the event at a "Super Saver" discount until April, 1st here.
Mai wieder in Berlin statt. Der Call for Papers geht noch bis 25. Januar.

Vielen Dank.

Just as a friendly reminder about what I wrote a month ago: we've already received a number of great talk submissions for the MySQL & Friends Developer Room at FOSDEM 2011, thanks to everyone who contributed so far! However, we still are looking for some more!
You can submit your proposal via this form. The deadline for turning in your talk is Sunday, 26th of December, 2010.
Just to recapitulate, the DevRoom (H.2213) will be available to us on Saturday 5th 2011, from 13:00 till 19:00. Each session will last 20 minutes plus 5 minutes of Q&A. See this year's schedule for inspiration — I think we had a great lineup of talks that addressed a good mixture of MySQL-related topics. I am looking forward to your ideas and suggestions! Thanks in advance for your support.

I've been informed about two upcoming events/conferences that are organized by the independent Oracle user groups of the respective countries. If you're nearby, how about submitting a talk about a MySQL-related topic?

On March 29, 2011 the the Oracle Benelux User Group will have their yearly OBUG Benelux Connect 2011 conference, which will take place in Brussels, Belgium. You can submit your proposal until December 3rd, 2010 via this link.

On May 19th and 20th, 2011, the Oracle User Group Finland together with the Oracle User Groups of Estonia, Latvia and Russia will organize the EMEA Harmony 2011 Spring conference, which will take place in Helsinki, Finland. The Call for Papers has been opened — you can submit your speaking proposals until February 1st, 2011 via this submission form.
And while we're at it: the MySQL Developer room at FOSDEM 2011 in Brussels is still seeking for more talk proposals, too! Please consider submitting your suggested talk until Sunday, 26th of December, 2010

Am 5.+6. Februar 2011 findet in Brüssel die "Free and Open Source Software Developers' European Meeting" (FOSDEM) - Konferenz statt.
Jeder Vortrag wird 20 Minuten dauern (plus 5 Minuten Q&A).

It's that time of the year again — the nice folks at FOSDEM have granted us a developer room at their upcoming conference (February 5+6 2011 in Brussels, Belgium)! As usual there were more applications than they were able to accommodate, so we are very grateful for this opportunity for collaboration. Titled "MySQL and Friends", our room next year will be H.2213 with a capacity of 100 seats. It will be at our disposal on Saturday 5th, from 13:00 till 19:00. Like last year, we would like to set up a schedule of talks related to the MySQL server and the various projects that surround it. Each talk will last 20 minutes, plus 5 minutes of Q&A and a 5 minute break for switching speakers, giving us 12 slots in total to fill with excellent tech talks. Take a look at this year's schedule for some examples! I hope we can assemble an even more exciting and interesting schedule for next year. Quoting from my last year's call for papers: We are looking for covering a wide range of topics that attract both MySQL DBAs as well as application developers that work with MySQL as their database of choice. Are you developing a new storage engine or other plugin? Do you want to share your experiences and best practices in administering or deploying MySQL servers? Did you develop a new method to scale a MySQL setup? Let us and the audience know about it! You can submit your talk proposal via this submission form. The deadline for turning in your proposal is Sunday, 26th of December, 2010, after which there will be a voting and rating period to identify the most interesting and attractive topics. Please check the FOSDEM 2011 information page on the MySQL Forge Wiki for more details and don't hesitate to contact me directly, if you have any questions or suggestions. I look forward to your proposals!

FOSDEM, the Free and Opensource Conference, will again take place in Brussels, Belgium on Saturday and Sunday (6th and 7th February, 2010). Now happening for the 10th time (congratulations!), it is one of the largest Open Source conferences in Europe, with a strong focus on developers. Sun/MySQL have been regular sponsors of and contributors to the event in the past and it is alway a great experience to be there. It's very rare to meet so many well-known and bright people from such a wide range of OSS projects.
They have now opened their Call for Participation - the organizers are seeking input on talks for the main conference tracks (deadline: 2009-11-22) , lightning talks (deadline 2009-12-28) and project stands (deadline: 2009-11-22).
As for the last conference, we plan to apply for a MySQL developer room (and maybe a project stand, anybody interested to join? Please contact me!). However, the web site currently states that they are "slightly reworking the concept of developer rooms", so it remains to be seen what this will turn into. In any case, we will set up our own call for papers, once the developer room allocations have been finalized (and we were lucky). I was initially thinking about running another OpenSQL Camp, but it's probably too short after the upcoming one in Portland...
If you have an interesting talk about a MySQL-related subject, consider submitting your proposal now! We will gladly review and comment on your proposal in advance, if you would like to get our input or need suggestions about topics! Thanks.

We've now concluded our call for papers for the MySQL Developer Room at FOSDEM 2009 in Brussels, Belgium, which will be open on Sunday, 8th of February from 09:00-17:00.
We received some excellent proposals and I am very excited about the schedule. Here's the quick summary of the talks:
- Vladimir Kolesnikov: Practicing DBA's Guide to the PBXT Storage Engine
- Kris Buytaert: Monitoring MySQL
- Geert Vanderkelen: MySQL Cluster
- Roland Bouman: MySQL 5.1 Plugins
- Kaj Arnö: MySQL, powering and using Social Networks
- Ewen Fortune: Percona MySQL patches and the XtraDB storage engine
- Giuseppe Maxia: Boost performance with MySQL 5.1 partitions
- Jurriaan Persyn: Database Sharding
See the Schedule page on the MySQL Forge for the detailed agenda, including the detailed session abstracts and speaker bios. These talks will soon appear in the general FOSDEM schedule, too. If you are interested in MySQL and any of the topics above, consider visiting us in Room AW1.126! Participation and attendance is totally free, though the organizers happily accept donations and sponsorships.
In addition to the Developer Room, MySQL will share a project desk with the OpenSolaris community. We are still looking for at least one more volunteer that would help us with manning the desk! If you are interested in helping out (2 hours at a minimum), please drop me a line!

A (slightly belated) Happy New Year to you! I just returned from my Christmas vacation two days ago, which I spent mostly at home and with my parents-in-law in St. Radegund, Austria. Now I am busy catching up with what has piled up during my absence (I managed to resist the temptation to check my work email during the time off).
Some MySQL-related news that came up in the past weeks and are worth sharing:
- My talk about MySQL HA solutions has been accepted in the main FOSDEM conference track
- The FOSDEM organizers also accepted my lightning talk proposal about Bazaar - it will take place on Saturday, 14h20 (tentative)
- MySQL will have a project stand, that we will share with the OpenSolaris Community. We're still looking for one or two more volunteers that would help us manning the table! If you would like to help out, please register here!
- MySQL will have a developer room at FOSDEM on Sunday. We will be in Room AW1.126 (72 seats) and the session schedule looks great already! We're still working on the fine tuning and scheduling.
- We've almost finished with creating a Japanese version of Planet MySQL (some minor encoding quirks remain to be fixed) and I finally got rid of the remaining parts of code that still used MagpieRSS (only in the admin backend parts) - now everything uses SimplePie instead.
- Dups added the MySQL Buzz to Planet MySQL
- I'm also working on sending out invitations to various MySQL-related projects to represent and showcase their work at the DotOrg Pavilion of the MySQL Conference Exhibition Area. Currently we have confirmation for attendance from Drupal, phpMyAdmin and Sphinx. What other projects would you like to see there? I am open for suggestions/applications

Quite a lot of exciting stuff going on, and more to come. This is a great start into the new year!
Friday, December 5. 2008
The FOSDEM 2009 organizers have been very kind to us this year: in addition to a Developer Room on Sunday, we now also have a project desk (1 table) on both days! Thank you very much! In summary, this means that there will be the following MySQL-related activities:
- We will have a Project Stand (one table) on both days
- On Sunday, we will have a MySQL Developer Room, allowing us to schedule our own track of talks about MySQL and related projects
- I have been invited to give a talk about "MySQL High Availability Solutions" in the main conference track
- I also submitted two proposals for lightning talks ("What's new in MySQL 5.1" and "Why you should use Bazaar for maintaining your OSS project") (pending approval)
In addition to employees from Sun/MySQL, we would also like to encourage and invite members of the MySQL Community to contribute to making the MySQL project's presence a success. We are looking for your support and contribution! Here is how you can help:
Give a talk about MySQL in the developer room
The MySQL Developer Room will be open on Sunday, 8th of February, from 9:00-17:00. We would like to set up a schedule of talks related to MySQL. As the audience will mostly be developers and DBAs, we are looking for in-depth technical sessions about the MySQL Server and related projects/tools (e.g Cluster, Proxy, Connectors, etc.). Each session will last for 45 minutes, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A.
If you would be interested in giving a talk, please submit your proposal via this page now! The deadline for proposing a talk is January 15th, 2009. We look forward to your submission!
After the call for papers has been closed, we will comment and vote on all proposals and will get back to you about further details!
Record/transcribe sessions
For people that could not make it to FOSDEM or some of the sessions, it would be nice to be able to provide video recordings or transcriptions (e.g. live blogging) from these talks. We're looking for volunteers to record the sessions! If you have a video camera or are an expert blogger, we'd like to hear from you.
Help us manning the project stand
We are also looking for MySQL users that are willing and excited to talk about MySQL to other people and would like to assist us with manning our project desk. Your task would be to be present at the project table, talk with other users and developers about all things MySQL, hand out merchandise (in case we get some) and marketing material as well as providing them with additional useful information (e.g. links to further information, contact information).
So if you are a MySQL enthusiast and plan to attend FOSDEM, consider sparing at least two hours and join us to man the table! I've set up a quick registration form in which you can leave your name, contact information and times you would be available. We will then get back to you about further details. Thank you!
Contact / Mailing list
To facilitate the organization and for further discussion, please join our public Community mailing list! I've also set up a Wiki page on the MySQL Forge to track and document our FOSDEM 2009 activities. I am looking forward to your feedback and suggestions!

FOSDEM 2009, one of the biggest European Open Source conferences, will take place on February 7-8 in Brussels, Belgium. Today I received a confirmation from the organizers: MySQL will have a developer room on Sunday, the 8th! This is very cool.
My idea was to organize some kind of MySQL mini-conference, with a focus on developers and DBAs. I am going to send out a more formal CfP soon, but if you have any ideas or suggestions for a talks/sessions already, please get in touch with me!
In addition to the devroom, I have also been invited to give a talk about MySQL High Availability solutions in the conference main track. In this talk I plan to cover some commonly used HA setups for MySQL, including the OSS components/tools (for Linux and OpenSolaris) involved. I will mention MySQL Cluster as well, explaining the relationship and architecture of MySQL Server and NDB Cluster. I hope this will be of interest to the audience.
I also submitted two lightning talk proposals: "New features in MySQL 5.1" and one about "Why you should use Bazaar for maintaining your OSS project", but I won't know if these were accepted until the end of December...
See you there!
Monday, February 11. 2008

Like in the years before, I (and some other colleagues from MySQL) will be attending FOSDEM 2008 in Brussels, Belgium on February 23rd and 24th.
The schedule is packed as usual and lists several MySQL-related topics and sessions:
If you also plan to attend, please ping me if you would like to meet!
