Just to point out that we are aware of MySQL embedded, a thread from 2007:

Though you are certainly right about it not being a well known feature. I wasn't aware of it until Akademy 2007 when Helio (a Mandriva dev) suggested that MySQL embedded would make a lot of sense for us.

Is it possible to get Windows builds of the embedded server library? Is a (recent) community version available?
Hi Mark, the Windows builds used to include the embedded server, not sure if this is still the case. To my knowledge the 5.0 release currently does not include it, but please check the 5.1 release and submit a bug report, if it is missing! Thanks.
